album review: eternal sunshine

Introduction

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog. I decided to start another REVIEW series!! I introduced Book Reviews and Musical Reviews, and I decided I wanted an album review! I was going to do an album review on Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘GUTS’ album, but I saw that ‘eternal sunshine’ by Ariana Grande came out just yesterday. Enjoy!

Ariana Grande Releases ‘Eternal Sunshine’ after her last album 3 years ago.

About the Album

‘eternal sunshine’ is the seventh studio album by Ariana Grande. The album was released on March 8th, 2024, by Republic Records. The album consists of 13 tracks with Pop and R&B and some dance elements.

intro (end of the world)

  • Ariana Grande's intros are always a treat (ex. imagine in ‘Thank u, next’). This song is a 1:32 minute that’s both catchy and beautiful. The song talks about a relationship that is falling apart, posing the question of whether she would be chosen if it were the end of the world.

bye

  • This is an upbeat, dance-pop song about relying on friends during a breakup. I loved this song as it was simple but also very catchy. There weren’t many different lyrics throughout the song (as the word ‘bye’ is said about 40 times throughout this song). I think ‘bye’ is a really fun song to listen to.

don’t wanna break up again

  • Another gloomy dance-pop song explores the emotional complexities of an unstable relationship, depicting a struggle between the desire to end the situation for the well-being of both parties and the challenge of letting go. I love the tone and the new style she chose to explore in this song.

Saturn Returns Interlude

  • It starts with astrologer Diana Garland explaining the concept of a Saturn Return. A Saturn return occurs when the planet Saturn returns to the same place it was when you were born, prompting a period of profound self-reflection and transformation. I thought this was an interesting song because it didn’t feel like a song. It was mostly just Diana Garland speaking with calm music in the background.

eternal sunshine

  • The title track and album title, ‘eternal sunshine,' is the song that excited me most. As expected, this is such a good song that I would listen to often, as it is very calm. The song sounds like a calmer and simpler version of “EASY” by LE SSERAFIM (which also came out recently). The song talks about walking away from a relationship and diving into a fresh start.

supernatural

  • Supernatural is catchy and repetitive; it sounds like ‘Breathin' from Ariana’s Sweetener Album. This song has astrological themes (e.g., Saturn Returns, eternal sunshine). It wasn’t my favorite song on the album, but it was definitely a good song.

true story

  • This song shows a narrative of rejecting insincere love and refusing to play along with deceitful games, emphasizing the desire for genuine love and authenticity. I thought this song also responded to some rumors about Ariana Grande that surfaced around the internet. It was a very simple song with a deep meaning behind.

the boy is mine

  • In an interview, Ariana explains that "The Boy Is Mine" and "True Story" are sister tracks, with the former being a 'bad girl anthem' that sets up the latter. These songs are intricately connected, with "The Boy Is Mine" laying the foundation for the "True Story" vibe in her music. It is a really fun song.

yes, and?

  • ‘yes, and?’ is a pre-release house-pop song that was released on January 12th. The song also went up the Hot 100 and stayed for about a week. This had to be my least favorite song in the entire album. I don’t hate the song, but it wasn’t my favorite compared to all the other songs Ariana blessed us with.

we can’t be friends (wait for your love)

  • This song has a music video you should check out! It is right after the album rankings. The music video for the single was inspired by the film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," though upbeat, the song explores the melancholic aspects of a romantic relationship.

i wish i hated you

  • The song "i wish i hated you" delves into the complexities of relationships, highlighting that the end of a relationship is not solely one person's fault and emphasizing the importance of both love and passion for a relationship to thrive. I definitely recommend you listen to this song.

imperfect for you

ordinary things (feat. Nonna)

  • This one was so creative! Ariana Grande’s grandmother, Nonna, advised how to tell if you are in the right relationship. Nonna says, “Never go to bed without kissing goodnight. It’s the worst thing to do. Don’t ever, ever do that. And if you can’t, and if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you’re in the wrong place. Get out.” This was a really good way to end the album. I think that Nonna answering a question in the last song of the album, first asked in the first song, is such a fun storyline for the entire album.

If the moon went dark tonight and if it all ended tomorrow, would I be the one on your mind?
— Ariana Grande from "intro (end of the world)"
