Negative Effects of Littering on Animals

Introduction

Welcome to another blog post! Thank you for the support that Dailyist has been receiving! Last post, I wrote some advice for time management in your studies!

Recently, I have seen lots of trash around my school campus. Empty chip bags, plastic water bottles, and much more trash. I wondered what animals would do and how they would be affected. So, I did some research.

The Research
Over one million animals are estimated to die each year as a result of becoming trapped in or consuming litter. Plastic trash is the most common wildlife killer, especially among marine creatures. According to Guilford County, annually, about 100,000 dolphins, fish, whales, and turtles die needlessly from interference with plastic or eating it (Visit the site I got this information from: https://www.guilfordcountync.gov/Home/Components/News/News/2413/)

Trash that is not properly disposed of influences more than just marine wildlife. Birds can die from consuming poisons from objects littered on the side of the road, depending on the type of litter. Looking for food, birds find brightly colored garbage appealing, but they can’t digest it. These objects remain in the digestive tract, blocking food passage and eventually starving the bird.

How to Resolve this Problem!

Littering is a huge problem around the globe as roughly 728,000 tons are littered every day. Well, how can we stop this? Here is a list of things we could do to prevent littering:

  • We can maintain a neat yard and remove the items that could fly onto the street and become litter.

  • Recycle! Recycling helps a lot. Many greenhouse gases and water pollutants are prevented, and energy is saved by recycling.

  • Teach your children or tell your friends how to recycle. Many people litter because they simply do not know how to recycle.

  • Participate in community cleanup events. Even if you don’t have time, you can always visit these events on the weekend!

These methods help animals become safe and live in a clean environment. You should also contribute to saving the environment and animals.
